Interview Questions for the US Student Visa

An F1 visa is a non-immigrant visa issued to international students wishing to study in the US. The students must file an F1 visa application if they plan on entering the US to attend a university of college, high school, private elementary school, conservatory, language training program, or other academic institutions.




Ensure that you have followed the US Embassy or consulate interview preparation instructions. Students should make sure they reach the embassy at least 30-45 minutes prior. A consular officer will interview you and determine whether or not students can receive a visa.


The F1 Visa questions can be broken down into 4 parts.

- Questions on Colleges/ Universities

- Academics

- Finance

- Returning to India


Questions as to WHY the student selected the USA included queries such as:

Q1) Why do you wish to study in the USA and not in India?

Q2) Why did you select the US for higher studies? Isn't this course offered by any university or college in India?

Q3) Have you ever been to the US?

Questions about Institute/ University/ College:

Q1) Which US university are you planning to go to?

Q2) Why have you chosen this specific university?

Q3) How many US universities did you apply for?

Q4) Can you mention the names of some professors?

Q5) Did you receive any scholarships?


Questions about the course:

Q1) What course are you going for? What is the duration of your course?

Q2) Why did you select this course? Is this relevant to your previous studies?

Q3) What is the course structure & contents?

Q4) Why don't you do this course in your country?

Q5) What is the scope of your course?

Q6) How will this course benefit you?

Q7) On what date does the course commence?

Q8) What will be the total cost per year?

Q9) Where will you stay in the US?


Questions about academic backgrounds:

Q1) Where did you do your last course of study?

Q2) What is your specialization?

Q3) What is your high school percentage or grade?

Q4) What were your subjects in the last course of study?


Questions about the student's family:

Q1) What does your father do?

Q2) How many brothers and sisters do you have?

Q3) what is your father's annual income?

Q4) Do you have any brother/ sister or any other relative already in the US?

Q5) Who is sponsoring your study?

Q6) How can you convince us that you will return to India on the completion of your course?

Q7) Could you please show me your TOEFL/ IELTS scorecard?
