Beyond Borders: Why Indian Students Choose to Study Abroad

By 2024, around 18 lakh Indian students are projected to study abroad.

But why is an average Indian student leaving their country for further studies?

Let us try to understand.

Where a student should study for graduation or post-graduation is a question that arises at some point of time in the life of every student and many Indians opt to study abroad as employers tend to view candidates who have graduated from prestigious foreign institutions in a positive light. This is due to the fact that these universities are renowned for offering top-notch education, resulting in graduates who possess sought-after skills.

Additionally, obtaining a degree abroad allows students to immerse themselves in diverse cultures and hone their cross-cultural communication abilities which has become a required skill-set for every job.

While many Indian students face challenges in securing employment post-graduation from India. Despite advancements in the quality of education in India, there is still much room for improvement. The root of the issue lies not with the students themselves, but with the Indian education system, which places a higher emphasis on rote memorization rather than fostering true conceptual understanding.

There is an absence of practicality in the Indian courses which does not give them the skills that are necessary for their particular courses. One of the most prominent trends in India is the focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics courses. Unfortunately, this leaves little room for students interested in exploring other areas of study.

In India, students have many chances to get financial help for their education through scholarships which can come from different sources like companies, generous people, governments, and schools. They help students with their studies and research projects.

It's no wonder more and more Indians are opting to pursue their studies overseas!

As the number of Indian students graduating from school continues to rise, the demand for quality colleges and universities exceeds the supply. Factors such as the accessibility of education loans and scholarship options have further fueled this trend which can greatly reduce the burden of tuition and living expenses, otherwise experienced in India.

Australia, Canada, the UK, the US, and New Zealand are currently leading the pack when it comes to post-study work rights. These countries have never been more generous in their policies. Australia and Canada have even gone so far as to remove restrictions on part-time work for international students, allowing them to work more hours while studying. This not only helps students pay off their education loans quicker, but also enhances their overall student experience.

Who knew working part-time could be so beneficial?

Studying abroad is like a golden ticket to a world of better job prospects and fatter paychecks. Sure, salaries differ depending on your field of study, where you end up, and how skilled you are. But let's face it, countries like the United States, Canada, and select European nations generally dish out bigger paychecks which students cannot achieve in India.

Even though the Indian tech industry is on the rise, trying to narrow the gap, the final destination is faraway.

Navigating higher education in India is still a challenge. Despite the prestigious institutions such as the IITs and IIMs in the country, none of them manage to secure a spot on the global rankings. The sky rocketing cutoffs at Indian colleges only add to the stress levels of students, prompting many to seek education overseas. Despite the hefty price tag attached to these degrees, they continue to attract thousands of Indians.

If not because of these reasons, the idea of a “LIFETIME EXPERIENCE” convinces Indians to pursue their education from abroad.

In the fast-paced and cutthroat world we live in today, students who get an international exposure will undoubtedly have a leg up on the competition!

Studying in an international environment equips students with the skills to be self-sufficient in handling and resolving their own affairs.

Employers are always on the lookout for candidates who have dared to go beyond their comfort zones and studied abroad. Why? Because these individuals bring a unique perspective and a sense of adventure that others may lack. It's not just about earning a degree; it's about showing the willingness to embrace new experiences and a confidence to pursue them.
