  • The Top English Proficiency Tests for Study Abroad Aspirants

Application season is here. We are guessing that this is probably one of the most stressful times in your life, especially if you are a student hoping to study overseas. Picking one country amongst a hundred others and narrowing down on a few potential universities that you’d like to attend is a grueling task as it is. And then there are the mandatory English Proficiency Tests. Oops, has reading this gotten your nerves racked already? It does not have to be this way. Before you crash numerous websites attempting to piece together some information on these tests, we’d like to stop you right there. You don't have to look any further. Here is everything you need to know about the most common English Proficiency Tests. If you are an Indian student planning to study abroad, your English proficiency is an important box on your checklist. To test this, universities across the globe mandate that you attempt a standardized English Proficiency Test. The most commonly accepted tests are the IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, and the Duolingo English Test. Remember that your score in these tests can be decisive in determining the next step of your dream to study abroad. Make sure to make the right choices! Here is a quick analysis of the various tests to help find the right one for you.  International English Language Testing System(IELTS):  The IELTS is the most common English Proficiency test taken by lakhs of students every year. Students can undertake either the computer-based or the paper-based IELTS at several dedicated test centers across the country. The duration of the test in 1 hour. IELTS, although high-priced (about 17,000 INR) in comparison to other exams, is a common choice for many aspirants. However, many believe that the fee is within reason given its recognition in popular educational destinations such as the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the USA.  TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):  The TOEFL is also one of the most common tests that students attempt every year. The TOEFL is an internet-based test and costs about 16,000 INR. The duration of the test is about 2 hours. The TOEFL is also accepted in a number of countries such as Canada and USA among others.  PTE (Pearson Test of English):  The PTE is a moderately designed proficiency test with a duration of about 3 hours. There are about 69 test centers available in most major cities in India. The fee for the PTE is about 13000 INR and is accepted in countries such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Duolingo English Test(DET):  The Duolingo English Test hosted by the popular language learning service Duolingo is an entirely online and relatively easier English proficiency test to take. The test-taker is able to access their scores within 2 days of completion. Despite its convenience, the DET is only accepted by about 5,000 universities in the US, UK and Canada.  While you're at it, here are a few very simple but often overlooked tips that will help you prepare for your English Proficiency Test:  Read, read, read : You’ve probably been advised by the elders in your family to read the newspaper. While reading the newspaper is evidently helpful to improve your vocabulary, we’d ask you to just read anything you like! This will help you make reading feel less like a chore.  Record yourself speaking : There are several apps available for you to record yourself speaking in English and receive feedback from an expert. With time, speaking to yourself inside your bedroom turns into recitation. Make it a point to speak with others! Fake it till you make it : If exam halls make you anxious, you may benefit from practicing mock tests in conditions similar to the day of your test. Find a quiet room, maybe even a friend or two who would pretend to take an exam with you. They are clearly the real ones! We know that picking the right English proficiency test is not easy. We know that for you, it depends on several things, even things like your budget and test durations. Despite individual limitations, we know that with the right guidance, any student will be able to succeed in a test of their choice.  We are committed to helping more students live out their overseas dreams. For aspiring Indian students hoping to study overseas, 2025 has been a year of uncertainties. If you're nodding along, you're not alone. Thousands of Indian students are discovering that sometimes the best opportunities come from looking beyond the obvious choices. While countries like the US and UK tighten their visa policies and create bureaucratic mazes, Germany has quietly positioned itself as the refreshing alternative that Indian students have been searching for.  Why Germany is winning hearts and applications The numbers tell a compelling story. Applications from India to German universities have jumped by an impressive 35% in recent months. This is allegedly owing to the fact that Germany is offering something increasingly rare in international education: transparency and affordability without compromising on quality. Most German universities charge minimal or no tuition fees. This is in stark contrast to the hefty price tags attached to degrees in other countries. Dr. Philipp Ackermann, the German Ambassador to India, recently highlighted this during a press briefing in New Delhi. He noted that amid the challenges Indian students face elsewhere, Germany has witnessed a sharp rise in interest for its universities and research institutions. Why Germany may could be your dream study abroad destination this 2025 Currently, around 50,000 Indian students call Germany their home away from home. This makes it one of the top five study destinations for Indians. But what makes this figure particularly interesting is its trajectory. Unlike other countries where Indian student numbers are stagnating or declining due to policy changes, Germany's numbers are climbing steadily. German universities have built their reputation on the basis of rigorous academic standards and state-of-the-art research facilities. Germany also maintains a relatively straightforward and predictable visa processing system. Students report fewer last-minute rejections and more clarity throughout the application process. Looking Ahead As global education continues to reshape itself post-pandemic, Germany is welcoming Indian students in hundreds with each passing year. For Indian students weighing their options, Germany offers something precious in these uncertain times: a clear path forward with transparent processes, quality education and reliable opportunities for growth. • Harvard University: Important Changes in International Student Enrollment

Thousands of Indian students aspire to get into what is one of the most prestigious institutions in the world. It's the place where the top 1% get their education and for many young aspirants in India, Harvard is the embodiment of the ultimate American dream. But for those who came one step closer to this coveted dream, 2025 has been a year of hurdles and surprises. The entirety of the academic communities across the world have been left utterly shaken by the abrupt ban on international student enrollment into Harvard University. Harvard University is now fighting a legal battle to reclaim its capacity to admit promising young students from around the world. The best insinuation in the world and the alma mater to some of the greatest minds in the world has taken the American President to court. And this is a legal battle that can possibly reshape the nature of higher education in America. The initial ban on international student enrolment and its immediate impact Homeland Security Secretary of the USKristi Noem ordered the department to terminate Harvard University's Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification effective for the 2025-2026 school year. In the immediate aftermath, the order sent shockwaves through the university's close knit international community. This decision directly affected over 7,000 international students and scholars currently studying at Harvard, who make up approximately 27% of the University's total student enrolment. The timing of such an order has made it all the more challenging for students who've spent years chasing the Harvard dream and are actively preparing for the upcoming academic year. Those already in the institution now ought to transfer to another recognized institution in the USA or risk losing their legal visa status in the United States. Meanwhile, thousands of prospective students who had received their coveted admission offers not long ago for intake into the summer and fall terms now find themselves overlooking an uncertain future. The legal battle and the temporary relief that came after Harvard wasted no time in responding to the American administration's shocking action by filing a lawsuit in a federal court in Boston. The university argued that the government's decision is in direct violation of the First Amendment and would have ‘immediate and devastating effect’ on both the institution and its international students. A federal judge said that she would issue a preliminary injunction that would allow Harvard to continue enrolling international students. This means that the order to evict international students and bar any new ones from admission into the University has been halted, at least for now. The Trump administration's efforts to ban international student enrolment has been  upturned by the intervention of the court. However, this only provides what is temporary temporary relief and the legal battle rages on. The order has even broader changes in immigration policy  The present legal situation moves beyond the specific case of Harvard. Officials representing the Trump administration have said student visa and green card holders could be subject to deportation over their support for Palestinians and criticism of Israel's conduct in the war in Gaza. Additionally, the State Department has temporarily suspended the scheduling of new student visa interviews worldwide. This pause is a move that will now allow US embassies and consulates around the world to screen the social media of all visa applicants. The new vetting process will require consular officers to review applicants' online activities and save screenshots of any potentially concerning content. This review applies to all applicants seeking F (academic students), M (vocational students), and J (exchange visitors) visas. The policy has particular implications for students who have been involved in political activism in the past as well as for those who have expressed their personal views on international issues. The administration has indicated that participation in certain campus movements or protests could also result in students being denied visas. Looking ahead While the federal court's preliminary injunction offers temporary protection for Harvard's international students, the broader questions about US immigration policy and higher education, at this point in time, remains a matter of uncertainty. The coming months will likely determine not just the fate of Harvard's international students but also set a precedent for how similar situations might be handled at other institutions in the USA.

Now, if you're an Indian student, you perhaps may not even have to leave your homeland to receive the best of education.  What are the approved institutions? • Separating Fact from Fiction: Isn't Getting A US Student Visa Harder Than Ever?

International students from India are losing sleep over their American dreams. Social media rhetoric about changing visa registration has sent aspiring students into a frenzy. With each passing day, news headlines are knocking doors with information about visa cancellations, deportations and funding cuts. It is now that we advise students to pause and ponder upon things. Is your American dream in danger? Here's the truth: most of your fears are built on misunderstandings and viral misinformation. The ground reality is massively different from the hysteria on social media  Isolated student visa issues do occur in the United States. In fact, they occur in almost everything in the world. These typically only involve specific violations rather than blanket policies targeting students. The day-to-day experience for legally enrolled international students remains largely unchanged. Most campus communities wouldn't even notice year-to-year policy shifts if they weren't constantly refreshing news feeds. Yes, some students have lost their visas but these cases are exceptional and usually involve clear rule violations. When visa issues arise, they're typically linked to specific circumstances and not arbitrary decisions. STEM OPT isn't going anywhere (yet) As though visas being nullified aren't nerve wracking enough, social media is now raging with the possibilities of STEM OPT being scrapped. As a result, students are now anxious also from proposals that haven't even become reality or tabled in the parliament. And the bill to end the STEM OPT program remains just that. Meanwhile, American universities continue to actively recruit international talent, particularly in STEM fields where a shortage of skill still persists. American institutions need these students both academically and economically.  The misconception about freezing of funding The funding freeze isn't what most students think it is. It's a targeted proposal affecting specific government-backed PhD research programs and not the broader Master's student population. Study abroad financing for Master's programs continues without disruption. Students aren't backing down Despite the media storm, international students haven't abandoned their American dreams. At recent information sessions held in Mumbai, interest in US universities is still going strong. President Trump has publicly stated his support for skilled international talent and expanding H1B visas. This is a clear cut sign that the doors still remain open for qualified international students from across the globe. Are you an Indian student dreaming of getting into a top institute in the USA? • University of Western Australia to Set Up Campus in India

The University of Western Australia (UWA) is making headlines with its exclusive plan to establish multiple branch campuses across India. The University is looking to headquarter this move by building a main branch in Mumbai. Upon doing so, UWA will become the first among Australia's elite Group of Eight universities to plant its flag on Indian soil.  Official Steps Forward Ranked 77th globally and sitting comfortably in the top one percent of Australian universities, UWA brings world-class education and graduate employment rates to the Indian market. The university has already submitted its application to India's University Grants Commission (UGC). This follows the regulatory framework established in 2023 that allows foreign universities to operate from campuses in India. "We are proud for UWA to have chosen our first global branch campuses to be established in India," said UWA Chancellor Smith-Gander.  Part of a Growing Movement The University of Western Australia is not alone in recognizing India's potential as an upcoming education destination. The UK's Southampton University is also in the process of establishing a campus. Australian universities like Deakin and Wollongong already operate in Gujarat's GIFT City. Queen's University Belfast and Coventry University have also received approval for campuses there. Interestingly, no American university has yet established an offshore campus in India. This makes the University of Western Australia's move all the more significant. Looking Forward As India now overlooks a plausible UWA University campus in the country, the timing couldn't get any better. As India implements the National Education Policy (NEP) with a vision to further its higher education capacity, the arrival of prestigious institutions like the UWA are proof that we are headed in the right direction. With UWA leading the way among Australia's top universities, we might soon see more international institutions following their path to India.

In this article, let's talk about studying in France, one of the most picturesque and culturally sought after countries in the world. However, it turns out that France has so much more to offer, particularly in the education space. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for ambitious students seeking quality education and cultural experiences to flock to France. At UniNxt, we know of countless international students who initially came for the prestigious universities but stayed for the entire experience. The French approach to education is one that focuses on developing critical thinkers rather than perfect test-takers. This helps explain why their graduates are so valued in workplaces around the globe. What Does It Take? The financial aspect of studying in the country is worthy of mention too. Public universities in France charge tuition fees that might make American students weep with envy. These are often under €3,000 annually for most programs. Comparatively, even French private institutions tend to be much more affordable than their UK or US counterparts. The French educational system encourages you to question the existing and develop your own viewpoint as opposed to merely accepting the status quo. Therefore, if you are a student looking for an education that moves beyond your textbooks and lectures, France is a country that offers the best of education.  Daily life in the country builds you, too. Students love the rhythm of French cities, where you can walk from a morning lecture to a local market, grab ingredients for dinner and still have time to review notes at a café before meeting friends. The public transportation system actually works and this is a revelation for many international students. This makes weekend trips to nearby towns or natural areas both accessible and affordable.
